I think one of our best chances to thrive as a species is to simply continue to connect and collaborate with one another, the best we can. This window feels like it's closing on us--and with the rise of AI, it won't get easier to connect and collaborate. Humans are already showing signs of splintering off further and building deeper connections with AI. I think we need to pay attention to this.
Steven, I always appreciate your human-centric, very thoughtful perspective. I agree with you, of course. This isn't a question of whether AI is good or bad. It's a question of whether WE are. :)
I know that's a very simplistic thing to say - but maybe it's the core truth? Who uses it, and how they use it, makes all the difference. xx
Yup, agreed. This thing didn't invent itself, nor did it train itself, nor did OpenAI's ChatGPT break all app growth records without all of our involvement. We're actively choosing this path. I truly believe there are no solutions, only trade-offs. This thing might have the cure to every ailment we have, but what are we trading in for that?
I 100% agree. With every choice, there's loss. We're actively choosing this path. What are we losing? We have to ask that, and take an eyes-wide-open approach to this, as leaders, as PARENTS (God help us all), as creatives, and as citizens. There will be huge gains, no doubt. But, I fear we're not really talking about what's at stake. Maybe we can't know. Or maybe (as many ex-employees at Google and OpenAI have said), we DO know, and we're not talking about it.
Oh no, I'm sorry! If it makes you feel better, Sam Altman continues to say that Ilya did not see AGI and then got freaked out, and was super concerned, left OpenAI, etc. (which is a common meme). Sam's not the most trustworthy person, IMO, but even a broken clock is correct twice a day.
I know. I almost didn't publish this because it's not exactly a feel good piece. But, we have to have our eyes open so we can keep our hearts open, and our intuition sharp. xx

On the topic of former employees, this short piece by the Guardian on Ilya Sutskever is a must watch IMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iqn1HhFJ6c
Holy shit. I’m not okay rn.

This is so good AND pretty terrifying!!!
